Allen, William Burrows, 94, a long time Greenville resident, died Monday April 20, 2009 at Greenville Health Center. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Drover) Allen. Born in Cranston, a son of the late William E. and Phebe (Burrows) Allen, there he attended grade schools and graduated from Cranston East High School. He attended Bowdoin College in Maine, but graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1939 with a B.S. degree in biology. In 1941 he received a Masters degree in geology from the Univ. of Missouri at Columbia. Mr. Allen worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for over 30 years retiring in 1972. He was a WWII army veteran and was attached to 30th Engineers Topograph Battalion. He started playing tennis at the age of ten and continued playing beyond his 80th birthday.
He is survived by his children, William D. and David B. Allen, Phebe A. Jacobs and Jane M. Bishop. He also leaves seven grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Requiem Mass Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Rte. 44, Greenville. Visiting hours respectfully omitted. Burial will be in Benjamin Burrows Cemetery, Groton, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Thomas Church, P.O. Box 505, Greenville, RI 02828 would be appreciated.
