Joan Murphy Casement of Newport, Rhode Island, and a former summer resident of Jamestown, died on April 11, 2016 at the Philip Huiltar Hope and Hospice Center in Providence Rhode Island.
Joan was born in Providence Rhode Island on August 31, 1935.
Joan was the mother of Caitlin B. Casement of Burbank, California. She was the sister of Anne O'Brien (John), Neale D. Murphy Jr., Frances M.Araujo, John Austin Murphy (Mary Jane) and Robert M. Murphy.
Joan had fourteen nephews and nieces to whom she was devoted as well as numerous grand nephews and nieces. She leaves many close friends.
Following her education at Rhode Island College, Joan taught in Providence and Barrington public schools. In Barrington she taught special education for more than 30 years.
Joan's passions were politics and labor.
She was elected as a delegate to the Democratic convention of 1972. She was President of the Barrington Teachers Association for several terms and an active member of RI National Education Association.
Her family is grateful to the residents of Harbor House, to the staff of Newport Hospital, and the Philip Huiltar Hope and Hospice Center for their loving care of our Joanie.
A memorial gathering will be held at 1pm Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Harbor House, 111 Washington Street, Newport.
